A BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR VINTAGE JERSEYS
At the turn of the millennium, the Music, Art, Fashion and the Culture were at their Apex. They all coincided and inter-twined with each other and a huge hip hop fashion was rising.
In 2002, the Executive VP from a small company called “Headmaster” based in Southern California saw this opportunity and thought of a college line. Unlike the NBA, NFL, MLB where they have the rights to license out the entire team and the players, Headmaster had to reach out to each individual player and the colleges.
The original lists were names like Magic, Johnson (Michigan State), Jerry West (West Virginia), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (UCLA), Bill Russell (USF), Elgin Baylor (Seattle Univ.), Isiah Thomas (Indiana), George Gervin (Eastern Michigan) and so on for Basketball. For football, there were names like Terry Bradshaw, Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Johnny Unitas, Doug Williams, “Mean” Joe Green, John Stallworth, etc. Headmaster was able to secure and sign over 40 players and their school rights in 4 months and launched the first line called the “Signature Series” with personalized signatures each on its locker tags at the MAGIC Fashion show in Las Vegas in Spring of 2003.
Needless to say, the launch was more than a success! Within 4 days of the trade show, the company wrote over 5 million dollars in purchase orders from every Streetwear stores in the country and jerseys were seen everywhere from Music videos, Sports interviews, celebrities and athletes wearing them everywhere. The original MSRP for the “Signature Series” was 5 but the stores were selling them for 0 - 0 as they would sell out as soon as they hit the stores. Label / Management companies and the stylists for celebrities like Snoop, P-Diddy, Shaq, WWF, Entourage, ESPN were calling to get hold of these jerseys. The legends like Jerry West, George Gervin and Dominique Wilkins have personally called the company to get some jerseys.
By year one, licensing departments from schools like Michigan State, Wake Forest, West Virginia, DePaul were calling the company thinking that there was a mistake as the royalty payments exceeded over 0,000 and stated that they do not receive this much from companies like Nike and wondering who Headmaster was. And by this time, the company had over 100 players and colleges signed in all sports, Basketball, Football, Baseball and even Hockey. The company also signed players whom did not attend colleges like Kevin Garnett & Darryl Dawkins and produced their Hight School jerseys. They added the “Vintage” line which were retailing at 0 - 5 for the regular stores and kept the “Signature Series” for the top echelon Streetwear Stores.
With all the craze, it caught interests from the larger retailers like the Foot Locker, Finishline, Champs, etc. and the company developed its “Sport” line which were made with lighter mesh and smaller size cuts with limited few players. The purchase orders from each retailer would be over 7 figures.
Now after 2 decades, the retro-vintage Culture is back and we are able to open the 20-year VAULT and offer these “Retro-Retro” jerseys in their original condition.
