POPE-GOSSER ANTIQUE CHINA 4 FLORA BELL PATTERN 10" DINNER PLATES 1940S. USED. CONDITION VERY GOOD TO GOOD. SEE PICTURES: In Order: 3 of the plates have Pope Gosser China Made in USA STERLING 42. From the research I have done the 42 should be the year produced so 1942. Plate #2 has a tureen and research states that mark started in the 40s. Interesting if you look at plate 2 the design is exactly the same but some of the leaves look blueish gray while on plates 1,3,4 the same leaves are a darker green. Don’t know if they could have faded or if due to different production years. Plate 2 also has the most crazing in glaze and a chip out of top plate.
Beautiful vintage Pope-Gosser China plates in Flora Bell pattern (#3173). The decoration around the rim is roses interspersed with blue and yellow flowers. The pattern is beautiful, a true work of art. There is some crazing in the glaze on some of the plates, but it does not distract from the beauty of the plates. Pope-Gosser China was established in 1902 by I. Bentley Pope and Charles F. Gosser in Coshocton, Ohio. Early pieces were marked with the Clarus Ware mark. They then used the ‘Pope-Gosser China’ mark until about 1908, when they adopted the Unicorn mark. In 1920, the lettering on the mark was changed to ‘POPE-GOSSER CHINA’ in all capital letters, and in the late 1920’s through about 1931, “MADE IN U.S.A.” was included on the pieces. In the 1940’s, the company began using the tureen mark, and in the 1950’s, the wreath mark was used. So can’t figure out why the 3 plates have the 42 which I did read was the year yet the tureen was started in the 40s ??? At any rate they are beautiful plates and vintage lovers behold. Tried to provide pictures so can see issues and the color difference on the one plate one type of leaf. All other colors are the same. These plates are somewhere between 70 & 80 years old so think very good to good is appropriate.
