YANOMAMI “XOTO” BASKET
The Yanomami also called Yanomamo, and Yanomama, Shiriana,
Yanam and Sanuma and Yanomae live deep in the jungles of
the Amazon basin in both Venezuela and Brazil.
They have successfully maintained their traditional ways
of life thus considered one of the last culturally intact
native populations in the world.
Made exclusively by women, xoto, and wïï burden baskets
(pic no. 6) are woven from the titica vine with black fungi
threads or painted with natural paint, either a reddish color
from crushed onoto seeds or black masticated charcoal or from
the dark colored fruit genipapo. They are often decorated
with traditional designs and symbols that are reflections
of their cosmology.
Yanomami baskets are used for everything from carrying fish
to firewood. Xoto is a flat basket or tray, made for use in
the shabano or hut to store things as well as for serving trays.
They are stored by hanging from the shabano poles. The larger
wïï burden baskets are made in the same fashion except they
have a strap is attached that fits around the forehead while
the basket rests on the back like a backpack.
Please ask questions before you purchase and I will be happy to answer and if you like even take more photos of any part of this basket
