What are probiotics?
BioGaia ProTectis drops is a dietary supplement containing Lactobacillus Reuteri Protectis that has been tested in a number of clinical studies and proven both effective and safe for children.
Probiotics are dietary supplements, like vitamins and minerals. WHO defines probiotics as live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Most of them are bacterias.
What is Lactobacillus Reuteri?
Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis is BioGaia’s own patented probiotic bacteria. Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis naturally occurs in the human breast milk, especially in the first portion of it. Can be as well isolated from meat and diary products. It’s proven to be able to colonize human alimentary system. Using L. reuteri can help in acute infectious diarrhea, Helicobacter pylori infection, functional gastrointestinal disorders, tooth decay, vaginal infections as well as in the prevention of infections or allergy, but it’s best known for it’s positive aspect in cases of colicky infants.
What is baby colic?
Colic affects over 25 % of infants.  The most important symptom is  inconsolable crying, which causes stress for parents. Indeed, in the first 3 months of a baby’s life, crying is the No. 1 reason for pediatric visits. Parents often perceive- incorrectly- it to be either a sign of serious illness or a result of poor  parenting skills.
In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial on two groups of exclusively breastfed colicky infants ages 2 to 16 weeks received either Lactobacillus reuteri probiotic or placebo. The difference between both groups could be seen in just 7 days. The study shows that infants administering L. reuteri feel better sooner than children on placebo. Moreover, after 3 weeks, almost all of them stoped crying, in comparison: it occurred in less than ¾ of the babies in group on placebo.
Recommended Dose:
5 drops daily. Works best if taken 30 minutes before first feeding. One dose consists of a minimum of 100 million live Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis. Shake well before use. Recommended daily dose should not be exceeded. This product should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet.
Ingredients
Sunflower oil, medium chain triglyceride oil, Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis) and anti-caking agent (silicon dioxide).
